How it works
EVLA uses laser energy, delivered in a thin fiber-optic probe, to treat the underlying cause of the varicose vein.
The laser energy damages the vein walls, shrinking them and closing the faulty vein so that the blood cannot flow through it. This eliminates vein bulging at its source.
Performed under ultrasound guidance and local anesthesia allows a more gentle “minimally-invasive” approach to the treatment of varicose veins.
What to expect
-
Schedule an initial consultation with one of our physicians.
-
During the initial consultation, we will include a physical examination of the leg and a Doppler ultrasound to map the vein to be treated.
-
Once you are approved for treatment, we will schedule your appointment for the EVLA procedure.
-
Before the EVLA procedure, local anesthetic is applied.
-
A thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee.
-
Laser energy is delivered to seal the faulty vein.
After the procedure
After the procedure, the leg(s) treated will be wrapped and put into compression stockings that should be worn for about 2 weeks. Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity can be resumed immediately (avoid any strenuous exercise for one to two weeks.) There may be minor soreness and bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter, non-aspirin pain relievers as needed.
